For Class A Fire Hazards

For Class B Fire Hazards

Sized and located according to the Class A or B Hazard Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)
Film-forming fluoroprotein foam (FFFP)
Carbon dioxide
Dry chemical type
Halogenated agent type

For Class C Fire Hazards

Sized and located according to the Class A or B Hazard Fire extinguishers for protection of Class C hazards shall be selected from types that are specifically listed for use on Class C hazards.
(Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers equipped with metal horns are not considered safe for use on fires in energized electrical equipment.)

Class D Fire Hazards

75' Maximum Travel Distance to specific hazard Fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents for the protection of

Class D hazards shall be of types approved for use on the specific combustible-metal hazard being protected.

Class K Fire Hazards

30' Maximum Travel Distance to specific hazard

Fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents for protecting cooking media hazards, or Class K hazards, shall be selected from either a wet chemical type or dry chemical type.  Keep in mind that for deep-fat fryers, a regular dry chemical should be used instead of a multi-purpose dry chemical.  New kitchen installations are required to be of the wet chemical type.
