Cylinder Testing

The National Fire Protection Association through its NFPA 10 standard, sets forth the test intervals for hydrostatic testing and routine maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.  The NFPA 10 standard can be purchased in its entirety through the National Fire Protection Association's website.

Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers NFPA 10, 1998 Edition

Stored-pressure extinguishers that require a twelve-year hydrostatic test must be emptied every six years for complete maintenance.

(Note: Cartridge-Operated extinguishers are not stored-pressure extinguishers and are not required to have six-year maintenance.)

Extinguishers that are non-refillable, disposable containers are exempt.

(Example: An extinguisher purchased new in 1998 would require six-year maintenance in 2004 and hydrostatic testing in 2010.)

Did you know that each year, fire claims the lives of more than 4,000 Americans and injures more than 25,000?

Children of all ages set over 100,000 fires annually.  Over 30% of fires that kill children are set by children playing with fire.

Keep matches and lighters locked up and away form children.

Check under beds and in closets for burnt matches, evidence your child may be playing with matches.

Most importantly, teach your child that fire is a tool, not a toy.
